Missing from the Directory of Illustration 33

I had planned to continue to advertise in the Directory of Illustration and even bought a page, but it turns out I won't be there next year. After submitting my ad (see below) I got phone calls and emails from the Directory asking me to change the ad. They were never specific and changed the reasons they wanted a different ad. During one of the calls they asked if I was "worried about what female art directors might think." I was given a number of options of what the Directory thought my ad should look like and was even pointed to the ads of other artists that I should "copy," but at no time did they ever say exactly what the problem was with my ad.
I kept insisting that the choices I made for my ad showed the type of work I'm doing now, it is all recent work and two pieces (the medusa label, and the "Pussy Whip" whip cream label) are recent national design award winners. So isn't that the work I should be showing? So have a look at it and decide for yourself.

San Diego Comic Con 2016

I had a good time at Comic Con this year in San Diego. It was good to see people I know and talk to artists who produce impressive art.
I had nice conversations with Craig Elliot about mothers and other family members, Bill Stout about how John Milius and I have similar methods to present ideas to those that make the decisions, and Daniel Clowes (while signing my copy of Mr. Wonderful) let me know that I look just like his brother. Clowes suggested that I attend a family function with him and when I agreed I don't think he realized that I was serious. So if you know Dan let him know I'm waiting for an invitation.

I also, for the first time in awhile and the first time in color, got a piece of art in the souvenir book. My art was for the 50th anniversary of the TV show Batman. I was inspired by the Norman Saunders trading cards from the 60s and ironically my art was printed at the size my friends and I refer to as "bubble gum card size" or a quarter page. My art can be found on page 172. I also sent in Wonder Woman art - but it wasn't used.

Gothesque Magazine Phobias & Superstitions!

My first set for Gothesque Magazine is in the new July 2016 vol. 2, Phobias and Superstitions issue. They feature talented, Texas model Emma Anne with a plastic bag on her head. The photos explore the idea of Claustrophobia. I was lucky to work with Emma Anne while staying in Texas last year.

Here's an unpublished shot from the set.

Below are the cover, contents page, and a link to Gothesque where you can see more and get a copy of the issue.

More News From Europe: GLOWINSKIS' LIBRARY

Tadeusz "Teddy" Glowinski is a volunteer librarian in Poland who decided to start a non profit library of his own. Tadeusz asks writers, other librarians, artists, and publishers to donate books to his cause. Hard work and kind hearts have produced Glowinskis' Library, a library of over 8,000 books in 55 different languages.
Recently I received an email from Teddy asking if he could add something of mine to his project. Below is a picture of Teddy holding the copy of Zombie Circus I donated. I hope the people in Poland like it!

A new book: Art Compass 2016

I was asked to participate in a new art book last year and I'm happy to report that some of my digital art and information are included in Art Compass 2016. The first Art Compass 2016 is meant to be “…an authoritative text and a comprehensive reference book of contemporary protagonists of the classical arts of painting, graphics and sculpture.”

Art Compass 2016 will be presented at the Frankfurt and Leipzig Book Fairs. And is available on Amazon.

Prince Portrait

Many years ago, when I was still in school at CSU Long Beach, one of my advanced illustration classes gave an assignment to paint 4 portraits, one of mine was of (a new artist at the time) Prince. I recently moved twice in the last couple years and found many things I have not seen in very long time. My portrait of Prince was one of these discoveries and considering recent events I thought I'd share it here.

GDUSA Packaging Design Award 2016

This year I won my 3rd packaging design award (and 17th design award) from the people at Graphic Design USA Magazine. The award was for a prop I made for a photo shoot, a can of whip cream called Pussy Whip. The art was supposed to be in the April Edition of the magazine and on the web site, however for some reason or another I was forgotten. GDUSA was nice enough to quickly fix the situation online, but the magazine was already printed so I'm not there. These things happen but I did wonder if they finally took a good look at what the judges had selected! So this is what you're missing:

I plan on looking for a place to publish the photos using the can and will let you know if anyone picks them up.

I'm a little late, but for those of you attending the World Horror Convention in Utah this year, I'll have 20 different silk screens for sale in the Art Show Print Shop. Like this one of my frequent model Wolfie.
